The Building That Runs the Cloud

Start with the trunk.

By · Published

Every story in this book is a branch off four ideas.

01

The cloud lives in a building.

Chillers, batteries, generators, sensors and locked doors keep the servers alive. When the building fails, the digital service fails with it.

02

Building systems have computers too.

Most have software, a login and a network connection. Facilities or a vendor runs them, so security often can’t see them.

03

In a data center, the defense can cause the outage.

Cut off the wrong device and the server hall heats up. So every response has to be narrow, and decided before the night it’s needed.

04

Done means two checks pass.

The bad path is closed. The building is still doing its job. One without the other leaves the case open.

Chapters 1 to 4 show why these ideas are true. Chapters 5 to 7 show where the third one bites. Chapters 8 to 10 show the method that delivers the fourth, and what it’s worth.
